Sculptor David Perrett invites viewers to see his work as an evolving relationship between his original concept, the materials he uses, and the audience itself.

Whether he’s working with stone, wood, metal, or composite materials, Perrett explores the interplay between subject matter and medium, and how that relationship unfolds during the creative process.

“I’m perfectly comfortable with the idea that there are things that come out of my artwork that are not what I was originally thinking about, but are just as relevant as my original ideas,” he said.

Perrett, who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba and a Master of Fine Arts from York University, grew up in Winnipeg and later moved to Hamilton. He now lives in Luskville with his family. After relocating to the area, he joined artPontiac but stepped down early due to the demands of being a board member interfering with his work as an artist. He is currently preparing a body of work for a solo exhibition in Quebec.

Perrett’s work is meant to be experienced. When his sculptures are placed in public spaces, he values how they become part of the landscape — something people can touch, revisit, and connect with over time.

“Sculpture provides me with the framework to find wonder in the tangible, tactile elements of the world, to touch and manipulate the stuff of the universe, and to share my wonder with the broader public,” he said.

Perrett is the latest subject of the 100 Mile Arts Network’s “Art to Heart” series of mini-documentaries featuring Outaouais artists. The network’s goal is to boost the local arts economy and tourism by strengthening the artistic community across the region. Its mandate is to unite artists, venues, events, and community organizers, building capacity through promotion, skills development, artistic practice, and business support.
