Quiet City runs from May 2nd until May 28th.
Painterly views through Ottawa traffic cams
Martin Brooks presents Quiet City, an exhibition featuring painterly views captured through the City of Ottawa traffic camera network. Quiet City utilizes images from approximately 275 traffic cameras available under the City’s Open Data License.
Martin uses his original mathematical ShapeVision software to transform these photographs into a fabric of colourful shapes at multiple levels of detail. This unique process is the result of a long research journey into math and code to capture complexity in natural and urban phenomena. Drawing on fractal geometry and the work of mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, Martin creates painterly compositions.”
The project involves a dedicated monitoring process where Martin observes live camera feeds, waiting for moments of light and interest. The creative work bridges objective pure mathematics with subjective artistic composition, offering viewers a unique lens with which to see the urban landscape. Quiet City provides a fascinating visual experience that is both engaging and a reflection on the confluence of truth and beauty in the digital and physical worlds.
About the Artist
